THE MUMMY DIARIES: Supporting children when someone in the family has a life-threatening illness

This study day will present a positive and practical toolkit for clinicians who want
to feel confident to support parents and maximise the opportunities a sick parent
may have to give positive messages to their child/ren. It will show how straightforward
yet meaningful conversations, combined with innovative and easy interventions,
can make a valuable contribution to support the well child in palliative
care. From the title of the Channel 4 series featuring Julie Stokes working
with families where a mother was dying.

CRUSE BEREAVEMENT CARE PERSPECTIVES ON GRIEF CONFERENCE 2008

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY..."

An introductory course on communication skills, loss and bereavement for front line support staff.  The day will explore ways of responding to patients and their carers who may present with a variety of emotions such as anger or acute distress.  The session will include strategies when you 'don't know what to say', handling emotional states, managing difficult telephone conversations, awkward questions, theoretical input on 'loss-bereavement' and anger and suggestions for 'looking after yourself'.
