Brief history

1998

Childhood Bereavement Project (CBP) launched under the aegis of the National Association of Bereavement Services.

1999

3 years funding secured from Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund to set up a nationwide network of support services for bereaved children and develop standards and codes of good practice.

2000

Area Group meetings held throughout UK to encourage networking. CBP hosted by National Children's Bureau, a charity which seeks to promote the interest and well-being of all children and young people across every aspect of their lives.

2001

Draft of Network and standards circulated to key stakeholders for consultation. Childhood Bereavement Network (CBN) launched in June. Funding secured from Children in Need for Video Talkshops project, producing three videos to give a voice to bereaved children and young people.

2002

CBN commissioned by Department of Education and Skills Children and Young People's Unit to map 'open access' children's bereavement services and to list them in an online directory. Video 'A death in the lives of..' produced. List of Subscribers circulated to all members to aid signposting and referral.

2003

Video 'You'll always remember them - even when you're old' produced. 3 years funding secured from Community Fund and John Ellerman Fund to:

  • expand CBN Guidelines for Good Practice
  • encourage service development in areas with little provision
  • encourage policy development
  • raise awareness of the needs of bereaved children and the work of CBN

2004

Video 'It will be ok' and set of Guidelines for good practice in participation produced. 20 area meetings held, plus annual conference. List of Subcribers updated and circulated to members, and email bulletin launched.

2005

Conference held with Grace Christ and Donna Schuurman. Ongoing support offered to ten new childhood bereavement services. Programme of regional events held on securing support for childhood bereavement services.
